What is Castile Soap? A Simple Guide.
At Sharp’s Soap Co., we’re always asking the same question: What’s essential, and what isn’t? Castile soap is, at its heart, a simple thing — plant oils transformed into a gentle, effective cleanser. Offering it in concentrated form is just an extension of that philosophy. It lets us remove what isn’t necessary.
Water is easy to access at home, but heavy to ship. By leaving it out, we reduce packaging, lower shipping weight, and cut down on waste — all without changing how well the soap works. You get the same clean, just with more intention behind it.
A little truly goes a long way.
Concentrated Castile soap also gives you flexibility. You can dilute it to suit the task at hand — foaming hand soap, everyday cleaning, or whatever your home needs. One bottle becomes many uses, shaped by how you choose to use it.
For us, it’s not about selling more product. It’s about helping you bring less into your home.
Fewer bottles. Less waste. More intention.
That’s the kind of clean we believe in.
Common Questions About Castile Soap:
Castile soap is made entirely from plant oils — no synthetic detergents, fillers, or petroleum ingredients. Rooted in the centuries‑old tradition of olive‑oil soap from Spain’s Castile region, it remains a simple, concentrated, plant‑based cleanser without unnecessary additives.
Unlike many modern “soaps” that are actually detergent blends, true Castile soap is real soap: oils, water, and alkali transformed through saponification. The result is a biodegradable, gentle, multipurpose cleanser that works for hands, body, and home while keeping your routine simple and low‑waste.
Many people with sensitive skin prefer Castile soap because it’s free from harsh detergents and synthetic fragrances. Our formulas use only plant oils and essential oils, keeping things simple and gentle. Always consult a physician if you have questions or concerns about what is best for your skin.
Absolutely. Castile soap is a powerful all‑purpose cleaner when diluted properly. It works for countertops, dishes, floors, and more. Because it’s concentrated, a little goes a long way.
Cloudiness can happen when essential oils interact with the soap’s natural glycerin or when the soap is exposed to temperature changes. It doesn’t affect performance — it’s simply a natural characteristic of real soap.
Liquid Castile soap contains water and is often used in wet environments, so a gentle, broad‑spectrum preservative keeps it safe and stable over time. We use less than 1% of a naturally‑derived preservative system to ensure freshness without compromising simplicity.
Traditional Castile soap was made from 100% olive oil, and while that makes a wonderfully gentle soap, it also has a few limitations — mainly low cleansing power and very little lather. We use a blend of olive, coconut, and castor oils to create a soap that stays true to Castile’s simplicity while performing better in everyday use.
Coconut oil boosts the soap’s natural cleansing ability, helping it lift oils and grime more effectively. It also contributes to a brighter, more satisfying wash.
Castor oil enhances the lather, giving it a creamier, more stable foam. Even a small amount makes a noticeable difference in how the soap feels in your hands.
Olive oil remains the foundation, providing the mildness, conditioning, and skin‑friendly feel that Castile soap is known for.
Together, these three oils create a balanced, plant‑based soap that’s still simple and traditional — just with better lather, better cleansing, and a more enjoyable experience overall.
Castile soap isn't an antibacterial soap in the pharmaceutical sense - but it does effectively wash away dirt, oils, and germs when used properly with water. Like all true soaps, it works by lifting and rinsing away what doesn't belong on your skin. Clean hands don't require harsh antibacterial additives - just thorough washing.
Usually, yes. Castile soap is highly concentrated. For foaming hand soap it should be diluted with water. For general cleaning, small amounts go a long way. Using it diluted not only makes it gentler — it also makes each bottle last much longer. Check out our Usage Instruction Page to learn how to use Castile soap in many different ways!
Yes. One of its strengths is versatility. Depending on dilution, Castile soap can be used for:
- Hands
- Body
- Cleaning surfaces
- Laundry (in certain applications)
We love products that simplify the cabinet instead of cluttering it.
Water is heavy to ship — and unnecessary to purchase repeatedly. By offering concentrated refills, we:
- Reduce packaging
- Lower shipping weight
- Minimize waste
- Let you refill the bottles you already own
It's a small shift with long‑term impact.
Not always — but it will noticeably improve the final product. Distilled water helps your diluted Castile soap stay clear, consistent, and stable because it contains no minerals, metals, or contaminants that can interfere with the soap.
Tap water works in a pinch, but depending on where you live, it can introduce minerals that cause cloudiness, reduce lather, or shorten the shelf life of your diluted mixture. If you have hard water, using distilled water is essentially a requirement — the minerals in hard water react with soap and can leave it looking dull, filmy, or separated.
So while distilled water isn’t a strict rule, it’s the best way to get the cleanest, longest‑lasting, and highest‑performing dilution.
For best results, only dilute as much as you intend to use. While we include a gentle preservative in our concentrated Castile soap, it becomes less effective once water is added. Because of that, we don’t recommend storing diluted product long‑term.
A good rule of thumb is to use diluted mixtures within 30 days. This keeps the product fresh, effective, and less prone to contamination.
